Ang Lee SMASH!

Date January 11, 2001

Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Ang Lee has signed on to do the new Incredible Hulk film, citing David Hayter’s script as one of the clinching factors.

Um, this can’t be right can it? Ang Lee has always been versatile, but this just sounds strange. Maybe he’s itching to do a special effects, box office monster and this one called out to him. Maybe he likes the idea of doing his take on another ghetto-ized artform. It wouldn’t be dissimilar to what he did for Wuxia with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Can Hayter’s script be that good? My best guess is that he borrowed heavily from Peter David’s take on the Hulk, which has the Hulk being a superpowered manifestation of Banner’s multiple personality disorder. David had Banner developing MPD as a protection mechanism from an abusive father… Is Hayter’s take as (melo)dramatic?

A match made in BizarroWorld, to be sure. Of course, I’m guessing all of this is unsubstantiated rumor. It’s fun to speculate nonetheless, no?
