The Horror of Dialup
August 28, 2001
After five days, my DSL is finally, finally back online. I love broadband so much, it’s frightening. And after all my running around and testing and calling, my provider explains the problems as “I dunno. You just kinda fell off the network. And now you’re back. Beats me.” Coupled with my Vornado finally breaking down after ten years, my weekend was absolutely hellish.
Ah well. Considering this is the first outage I can blame on my ISP in two years, it’s not really that bad.
I connected by modem when I had to, and tried to do stuff with my life when I couldn’t. As a result, I ended up watching Pitch Black, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Center Stage this weekend. Pitch Black is a terrific low-budget Aliens clone. Jay and Silent Bob is really, really funny, but it may have the most tedious first half-hour of any movie I’ve ever seen. Center Stage is a ballet movie. It was on HBO, and I still can’t explain why I watched it. It was kind of like an afterschool special, with more dancing.
I also had dim-sum in Monterey Park, which made me happy at least an hour. Yay, dim sum.
