Sunshine

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the best thing I’ve seen this year, but honestly, I don’t want to talk about it much. It’s really something that you just have to see and absorb yourself. It is about love and hate and the persistence of memory and that’s about as much as I want to say.
The acting from everyone is really top notch, and the direction and visual imagery really knocked me over. There are all these subtly spectacular shots all over the film, and it all services the movie. Michel Gondry is billed as a “music video director” but don’t be confused. It’s not about fast cuts and nausea inducing camera work. Gondry’s always been about taking weird little storytelling concepts and bizarre narratives. Surprisingly, he’s been able to graft that onto a full-length feature with just his second try.
One of the things about the movie is that it can trigger more conversation about yourself than the movie. If you could erase someone or something from your memory, would you do it? Would it work out in the end?
