Random Linkage

Date January 19, 2003

Here’s all the random crap I’ve checked out on the internet lately. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, all of it is worth looking at, as long as you have broadband (some of them are big downloads).

First off: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs interview and live performance on the John Lamacq show. I’m putting the link up here for my own reference more than anything. The BBC Radio site is practically impossible to navigate, and keeps redirecting you like if you were in some kind of infinite error loop. Anyway, the performance is four songs long, including three new ones not on either of the EPs released this year.

If you’re down on yourself or lacking in inspiration, I highly recommend going here. Make sure you’re sound is on (but not too loud). Sean Connery always knew the right thing to say. This is a supadupa old link, but the wisdom is timeless, really.

To burn some brain cells, I had a good time checking out Gridlock which is a simple little game of brick moving. Frustrating but really fun.

Here’s a really fucked up Electric 6 music video. [Warning: 35mb download] Featuring Jack White on vocals and a moose with a luminous crotch, this video is a can’t miss. It’s a bit freaky, and has the side effect of making you yell “DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE” at all the wrong times (like in the middle of a meeting).

FOX, just trying their hardest to prove me wrong every time I’ve said they can’t get any lower, showed a program last week called Man Vs. Beast. Can World Champion glutton Kobayashi eat more hot dogs than a grizzly bear? Can a team of 50 midgets pull an airplane further than an elephant? Can a sprinter outrun a giraffe? Man Vs. Beast answers these age old questions. What, you’ve never asked these questions? As offensive as the synopsis sounds, the pictures on the site are EVEN WORSE.

Last link’s for Axel: Step Into Liquid is a new surfing movie, by the folks that put together the Endless Summer films. The footage looks beyond insane, and should shut up anyone that claims that Blue Crush had “the best surf shots ever.”

PS2 Much Information, Lady

Date November 5, 2002

So there’s this videogame on the Playstation2 called Rez, and it’s basically a shooter structured around Kandinsky’s theories on synaesthesia, the crossing of the senses. The idea behind the game is that every action you do (moving your character, firing at stuff) will have a visual AND aural representation… your movements will blend itself into the music and the wild color backgrounds.

I played the game once and honestly it kind of made me like I was living through the end of 2001, and I wasn’t too into it.

Anyway, in Japan, they sell this game with an extra attachment: The Trance Vibrator. Like the rumble packs, the attachment shakes and shimmies in accordance to your game actions.

Sounds dirty, right? I know what you’re thinking. I mean no one would really… you know, use this video game thing to do … you know. I mean, people would, but not with a video game… right?

WRONG. PEOPLE ARE HORNY, OF COURSE THEY WOULD.

[ Note: Link is not work safe, although if you're reading this at work, you're not exactly the model employee anyway, are you? ]

Em Kay Twelve Ninja Erotique

Date September 25, 2002

MK12

MK12, Kansas City designhouse ultra, has just come out with a new redesign for their site. The new theme? NinjaErotica. That’s right. It’s got Ninjas. And it’s Erotic. Dude, I didn’t make it up. Blame Matt Fraction.

Anyhow, check it out. It’s a big flash download and then another big quicktime download, but it should all move pretty quickly if you have a good connection. After checking out the main movie, make sure you check out some of the other work they’ve done, including the show packaging for TRL and ESPN’s The New American Sportsman (starring Rick Schroeder!). If you get a bit confused with the interface, just click on the shurikens on the right. That’s right. Navigation by Ninja Star. Like a compass rose but dangerous… and erotic.

O’Brien’s Advice

Date May 31, 2001

Pulled from MetaFilter: Conan O’Brien’s speech to the Harvard graduating class of 2000.

I didn’t even go to my own graduation from UCLA, but I would’ve if Conan was speaking. Christ, Harvard kids get all the luck. One of my favorite parts to follow:

So what can you expect out there in the real world? Let me tell you. As you leave these gates and re-enter society, one thing is certain: Everyone out there is going to hate you. Never tell anyone in a roadside diner that you went to Harvard. In most situations the correct response to where did you to school is, “School? Why, I never had much in the way of book larnin’ and such.” Then, get in your BMW and get the hell out of there.

You see, you’re in for a lifetime of “And you went to Harvard?” Accidentally give the wrong amount of change in a transaction and it’s, “And you went to Harvard?” Ask the guy at the hardware store how these jumper cables work and hear, “And you went to Harvard?” Forget just once that your underwear goes inside your pants and it’s “and you went to Harvard.” Get your head stuck in your niece’s dollhouse because you wanted to see what it was like to be a giant and it’s “Uncle Conan, you went to Harvard!?”

Mullet Matt Haughey

Date April 18, 2001

The day after I heap tons of praise on Matt Haughey and basically call him a god amongst men, I find this photo on Kottke’s page.

Just a reminder Matt is still human. And he’s kinda White trashy. =)

Stick-Fu

Date April 18, 2001

Any fans of Jet Li, Jackie Chan and big action should check out this homemade Stick-Figure-Fu movie.

Warning, big download. But worth it.

Metafilter Scholarship

Date April 15, 2001

Matt Haughey consistently does things to make me proud to know him. Now he announces a MetaFilter scholarship, to be awarded to one lucky student that is also a member of MetaFilter.

Rock on Haughey.

Khan/Coleman

Date March 31, 2001

My new favorite web game: Guess The Dictator/Sit-Com Character. It’s frighteningly accurate sometimes. I’ve had it guess Dwayne from “What’s Happening,” Darlene from “Head of the Class” as well as Genghis Khan. I stumped it when I tried Vicki from “Three’s a Crowd.” It guess Blanche from the Golden Girls.

The best thing is when I stumped it, it asked for a question to add in the database to help differentiate Blanche from Vicki.

Hilarious to sit there and have it ask you “Does your friend live with a rich uncle” and then ask you “Did you kill over one-million revolutionaries?” right afterwards. Pure web-genius.

Rodney's Widget for the FAlbum. plugged in.
